Term 1 2020 Student Groups – Becoming a Word Detective and Writing Wizard (Years 3/4 and 5/6) – Updated

Reading and writing is a juggling act – to perform well, students need strong vocabulary knowledge, good spelling skills, firm understanding of grammar and the ability to organise their ideas logically. As a result, some students struggle to become successful readers and writers – even when they have wonderful ideas! DSF is offering a series of small group sessions during Term 1, 2020, designed specifically to improve a number of skills that are crucial for reading and writing; namely, knowledge of vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension strategies. These sessions are based on high quality instructional approaches, including Word Aware, Talk for Writing and Sounds~Write.

The group on Wednesday afternoons is designed for students in upper primary (Years 5 and 6). This course, run by Tina Kilpatrick, will commence in Week 2, (12th February) and finish in Week 10 (8th April).

The group on Thursday afternoons is designed for students in middle primary (Years 3 and 4). This course, run by Sarah Grunwald, will commence in Week 1 (6th February) and finish in Week 9 (2nd April).

Presenters:  Sarah Grunwald
Sarah is a Speech Pathologist (CPSP) on the DSF clinical team who provides assessments and therapy services to students with literacy learning difficulties, language disorders and developmental disabilities. Sarah is dedicated to using high-quality evidence-based programs to teach language and literacy skills, with expertise in vocabulary development (Word Aware) and phonics teaching (Sounds-Write). Sarah is also experienced in planning and delivering Talk for Writing (TfW) in group settings and, as a TfW trainer, regularly runs comprehensive training to teachers and clinical practitioners across Perth.

Presenter: Tina Kilpatrick
Tina has worked extensively with school-age children in the areas of language and literacy, and is dedicated to using evidence-based strategies and resources in her clinical practice. Tina is particularly passionate about using high-quality texts as a vehicle for therapy, and supporting children to transfer their learning to longer pieces of writing, to ensure a meaningful context for intervention.
